Press Release: Peninsula Biosolids Coalition Calls on CRD to Immediately Stop Spreading Toxic Biosolids at Hartland

Recently released Capital Regional District data is cause for concern, showing that contrary to assurances given to the public that a maximum of 700 tonnes would be spread, in 2021 over 6,600 tonnes of biosolids were spread or buried at Hartland due to failures at the CRD’s new CRD Residual Treatment Facility. Public pressure brought by a consortium of environmental groups known as the Peninsula Biosolids Coalition, which includes the Mount Work Coalition to support Motion to CRD Board to end land application of toxic biosolids near Mount Work Park and Durrance Lake. Esquimalt Council Approves Second Phase Funding for IRM Study

Mount Work Coalition, along with community partners, Creatively United for the Planet and Esquimalt ECO Team, and South Island Climate Action Network voiced their support for Esquimalt’s plans for an Integrated Resource Management system that uses new alternative waste technology to reduce waste flow to the Hartland landfill. Esquimalt Council voted to approve funding for Second Phase of IRM study.
