Mount Work Coalition

Our Mission:

Protect.

Our primary objective is to encourage all levels of government to make policy and development decisions on the basis of community consultation, evidence-based research, and long-term, well thought out solutions. We feel the Mount Work region of the CRD is an important region to protect and that it is the responsibility of our elected representatives to ensure the health and safety of their residents, landfill employees, ecosystems, local farms and food security.

YOU HAVE A VOICE AND NOW IS THE TIME TO USE IT TO STOP THE CAPITAL REGIONAL DISTRICT (CRD) FROM:

  • Massively expanding the landfill

  • Destroying up to 73 acres of forest

  • Destroying and contaminating habitat of 16 Species at Risk

  • Increasing Greenhouse Gas emissions

  • Increasing and rerouting heavy industrial trucks through Mount Work and Durrance Lake parks

  • Spreading toxic biosolid waste on the land at Hartland which evidence informs will contaminate the parks, lakes and farms nearby

Our Key Concerns

Massive Landfill Expansion at Hartland:

With a lack of consultation and effective planning, it appears the CRD is forging ahead with massive expansions to the Hartland landfill despite evidence that the location cannot manage further development and that current expansion plans put citizens and environment at risk. The CRD’s plans are a 19th century solution for 21st century problems. Why not use 21st century technology and progressive alternatives?

better Management of Toxic Biosolids:

The Capital Regional District plans to spread toxic biosolid waste in the forests surrounding the Hartland landfill. Extensive scientific and health evidence from around the world demonstrates significant risks to people, ground water, farms, food and animals, immediately and into the future.

200+

Heavy Industrial trucks per day

On the Willis Point Road/Wallace Drive/West Saanich Road corridor.

The CRD’s plans for landfill expansion will SIGNIFICANTLY increase industrial trucks traveling along rural roads and recreational forestland and parks not able to handle heavy industrial use. As well, the impact on the Wilkinson Road/Interurban commuter corridor will be severely impacted causing traffic problems for residents and commuters on these already congested residential roadways.

980+

cyclists per day travel the West Saanich Road/Wallace Drive/Willis Point Road roadways

What will be the impact on bike-to-work, recreational and athletic cyclists who use these roadways daily when the Hartland Landfill expansion will increase industrial truck traffic exponentially?

Cyclists and dump trucks don’t mix on rural roads!

Adding industrial mining trucks and biosolid waste hauling trucks to the significant increase in garbage trucks will pose significant risks to cyclists, which the CRD seems willing to ignore.

30%

increase in air pollution

The Bunt & Associates Hartland Transportation Impact Analysis, a study commissioned by CRD staff, estimates a 30% increase in Greenhouse Gas emissions from industrial trucks if access to Hartland Landfill is moved to Willis Point Road. What’s not clear is if this includes the increased emissions from the approximate 200 trucks per day that will be hauling biosolid waste and possibly mined aggregate.

The 14-20 years of mining and quarrying will also increase GHG emissions. The destruction of 73 acres of forest will also be detrimental - trees provide carbon sequestration throughout their lifespan.

Get Involved

Help encourage all levels of government to make policy and development decisions for our region on the basis of community consultation, evidence-based research, and long-term, well thought out solutions.

You can encourage the CRD to examine more modern, climate accountable options rather than continuing to rely on outdated waste-to-landfill, which requires a massive landfill expansion and will worsen the climate emergency.
