It is well documented that processed human sewage biosolids continue to contain hundreds of contaminants including heavy metals, bacteria, viruses and emerging chemicals of concern. The Capital Regional District’s plan to spread toxic biosolid waste in the forests around Hartland landfill, near Mount Work and Durrance Lake (without the required community consultation) puts regional water supplies, farms, wildlife and people at risk through water runoff and windborn dispersal.
Safer alternatives do exist.
The CRD is choosing to ignore their own ban on spreading toxic biosolids in the region for expediency. Once these biosolids are spread, the contamination will persist for many years to come (as per the abundant scientific evidence).
