RE: Zero Waste BC releases report on Capital Regional District’s draft Solid Waste Management Plan

The Mount Work Coalition’s Mission is to provide voice and support for the protection and responsible stewardship of the Mount Work area through education, advocacy and research. This includes the goals of:

  • Encouraging local, regional (CRD) and provincial governments to make sound and transparent decisions that support the responsible management of the Mount Work area including the Hartland landfill facility, and

  • Advocating for the reduction of the environmental footprint of the Hartland landfill operations including mitigating any further damage or disruption to the surrounding natural ecosystem.

This also includes helping ensure ALL existing options and emerging technologies for responsible and climate accountable waste management are given full consideration and, where appropriate, are included in the CRD Solid Waste Management Plan with the goal of reducing waste-to-landfill as much as possible, thus eliminating any need to expand Hartland landfill.

Recently, Zero Waste BC published their report and feedback to the CRD on how the CRD draft Solid Waste Management Plan measures up through the lens of Zero Waste - “a goal that is ethical, economical, efficient and visionary, to guide people in changing their lifestyles and practices to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use.”

According to Zero Waste BC, zero waste “means designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them.”

This report includes many evidence-based recommendations for the CRD’s draft SWMP along with links to innovative examples currently adopted by other municipalities.
