Mount Work Coalition Needs Your Support
The Mount Work Coalition (MWC) is a non-profit society established last year to advocate for protection of the Mount Work region to protect it as a recreational and environmental treasure for present and future generations. MWC is run entirely by volunteers.
We need your financial support. Please consider donating today.
Successes to date:
Over the past year the Mount Work Coalition has pushed back strongly against the CRD’s plans to expand the Hartland Landfill and, in the process, removing 73 acres of trees on the slopes of Mount Work. As a result of our efforts, the Region’s Solid Waste Management Plan was amended to incorporate a higher aspirational target for solid waste reduction, and to postpone a decision on Hartland expansion until at least 2030.
Our Coalition has also worked collaboratively with other groups on the Saanich peninsula to oppose the spreading of toxic biosolids at Hartland because of the potential for contamination of groundwater and nearby farms and recreational areas.
Partly through the efforts of the MWC, the CRD has agreed to fund up to $4 million in road safety and traffic flow improvements at the junctions of West Saanich Road, Wallace Drive and Willis Point Road in order to mitigate concerns arising from the transfer of Hartland truck traffic to Willis Point Road beginning next year.
To defend the Mount Work area, we have mounted demonstrations, developed an active and informative website, have spoken at CRD meetings and have generated news coverage and placed op-eds in local media.
We have much more work to do:
We will be continuing these efforts over the coming year to ensure that the CRD explores technical solutions to solid waste and biosolids disposal in order to reduce the impact on Hartland. Fundamentally we will continue to advocate for the protection of Mount Work and will work to ensure that the CRD Directors remain accountable to citizens of the region.
All this work will be done through volunteer effort, but we need funding to maintain our activities, develop and keep our website online, and potentially carry out other activities such as water and toxicity testing. We invite you to consider donating to support our work that is so essential to maintaining a healthy and safe environment for the larger Mount Work region, including Willis Point, Highlands, Durrance Lake, Tod Creek watershed, Tod Inlet, Farmington Road farms and Prospect Lake.
A heartfelt Thank-you.
